my name is Annelien and I'm an 18 year old girl from Belgium. I just like to say that what you wrote in 'viggo theory' really got to me. I totally recognized myself in what you said about being swept away by this amaizing actor. I apreciate your honnesty, certainly after all the weird and obsessive stuff i've read on the internet. I was glad to find out that I am not the only one to 'worship' this artist in a non I-want-to-have-his-baby-way. the last 4 paraghraphs just took my breath away and I would just like to say that I admire your point of view and think that your oppinions and thoughts about him say more about your respect and 'love' for viggo, as an artist, then a screaming obsest fan. I really enjoyed reading your website and just wanted to tell you that you did a great job. i don't know what that means to you, comming from an 18 year old girl who doesn't even speaks proper English, but I really mean what I said.

kind regards,
Annelien

ps: i'm sorry if there are any big spelling mistakes but english isn't my native language so please excuse me for these mistakes.

[Annelien, your English is very good! I understood perfectly. Thank you so much for taking the extra time to write in my language.]

I enjoyed perusing your web site. I must say that I am in total agreement with Viggo's comments on life being too short. Life is too short, so be happy. Life is too short, so enjoy it...to its fullest. Life is too short, so love who you are while you're here. You are the only you you've got.

Thanks for collecting all this material for those who are interested.

gostaria de saber se viggo mortensen tem seus pais vivos ainda e qual a idade de seu filho, com a divorciada.

[Antonio, I hope I understood your question correctly. I tried to reply but the email bounced. So here is my answer in English:
Henry Mortensen, the son of Viggo Mortensen and Exene Cervenka, was born in 1988. I do not know whether Viggo's parents are living.

And in Portuguese, courtesy of Google translation:
O Henry Mortensen, filho de Viggo Mortensen e de Exene Cervenka, foi carregado em 1988. Eu não sei se os pais de Viggo's estão vivendo.

See more information on our new Viggo biography page.]

I ordered a copied DVD from antisocal of Vanishing Point with Viggo Mortensen.....I love the movie and there is no way it is rated R-----no cussing, no nudity, no drugs (unless you count the sweat box on the Rez........
This is a good movie and could be seen by all age groups -- besides Viggo it also has great scenery of one of my favorite places--Monument Valley
PS I really like your web-site--keep up the good work

[We agree, have changed our rating from IMDb's "R" to a PG-13. Thanks for pointing this out!]

Thank you for posting the music. The most exotic in Spanish was Envy--traces of flamenco. Viggo does not have a singing voice, however, this recording is stimulating.

I just wanted to thank you for this wonderful site but reading your Viggo theory impressed me very much. I could hear the echo of my own thoughts. It's unbelievable. For a long time I'm unsuccessfully trying to understand how did it happen, because I don't have an obsessive nature and I've never been interested in actors of any kind. I'm not easily impressed by a pretty face or a handsome person. Discovering Viggo was an unforgettable experience about an unforgetable man and artist. And it continues to be. I don't know him personally -and maybe it's better this way- but I can say he is intelligent, discreet, elegant, modest and very, very sensitive, and needless to say so very good looking. He writes, he paints, he sings and he knows just how to deal with words. And I can't help myself wondering: does he know what a striking effect he has upon people is he really unavare of his effect upon us, upon people? I wonder.....

Maybe you will visit it one day. The URL is http://intothewest.mindl3ss.net/. Do you also spend much time to create your page? *sigh* I do *lol*

As a Viggo fan and horsewoman, I found your site through viggophile.com. I adored "Brego" in LOTR, and was thrilled to read that he was trained by the brilliant Lockie Richards. I had the good fortune to attend a dressage clinic by Mr. Richards back in the mid-70's in Alabama, and was incredibly impressed by his patience, warmth and love for not only the talented, highly-bred horses, but for all of those participating. There was amazing improvement in all of the mounts, and I have always held him in the highest esteem. No wonder Uraeus is such a lovely-mannered guy!

Until I found your site I thought I was all alone in my admiration for Viggo Mortensen. I am of 'a certain age' and find that women in my age group are not into the same type movies that I enjoy. Unlike you younger women I want to mother Viggo. I want to tell him that life can be joyful and not always sorrowful...I would like to share with him my love of and service to the Indian nations of the Southwest. I think his humble artistic spirit must be akin to the Lakota, and to the Navajo that I know and love.

Thank you for this site and for the info on all the movies...I have chosen to purchase some of the earlier ones based on the reviews.

keep up the good work.

I thought I was the only Viggo fanatic. Imagine my surprise when I discovered your site. Wonderful! I have a friend who is as nuts about him as we are. It is too much fun to spend hours reading about Viggo. I have to get other things done but here I am reading again. Thanks for all your information.

Since I'm a horseperson I really like this site ;o) I read the part about Brego (the horse) and will just add that in the extended edition of The Two Towers when Aragorn tames Brego he starts out speaking danish... Not all of the sentence is in danish but Aragorn takes a little detour and for a few moments he is just Viggo speaking danish to a horse - I live in Denmark so I think it is pretty cool!!!
Big hug from Joey ;o)
Ps: Please bear with my spelling... we don't speak english in DK.

I too have an affection for Viggo, he has inspired me to pursue my horse career, and I am now in the process of becoming a riding instructor. Viggo, is a natural rider and he is able to connect with horses, horses are comfortable with him. He is gifted, and because he is so calm and kind horses naturally feel safe and trust him. More people should take after this amazing individual and learn from him, the kind hearted spirit that he has and be more tolerant of one another.

I really like your site, and your honesty, I thought I was the only one with an obsession so it is comforting to know that I am not alone! I am also older and felt ridiculous about my feelings for Viggo, but I feel you are right when you say that there is something missing in one's life when they live it through someone else. So for now I only admire him for his talent with horses and his artistic abilities. But gee wiz it sure would be nice to meet him some day!! Anyway, thanks for a wonderful website, I feel that it is the best one yet to represent Viggo! Keep up the good work!

I just read your little speech about obsession...and yes, it is scarey... and yes, I have it too. Not the speech, the OBSESSION. Good for me...
It caught me by surprise. My life was just fine until I realised that the cool Master Chief and Strider are the same person. And then all the hell broke loose.
Suddenly he become...the God...my obsession. In the beginning I just ignore it and hope that will go away. Well it didn't happen. Then I try to run over it by spending the endless hours on all Viggo site I could find. Gues what? It didn't work.
So now, the third phase is to try to learn to live with that. I'll let you know how I'm doing...in about 10 years.

You'll have to forgive me, my English is a little bit rough. In other aspects of life, you could consider me a seminormal person. But when someone mention anythyng remotely concerning Viggo...He is such sweet poison, please let me know if somebody have some antidote.
Or maybe not!?!

Hi Donna...Thank you for putting into words my feelings about this whole Viggo phenomenon going on in so many people's lives. I too am a creative person just ready to burst and Viggo is one of my inspirational catalysts. I have also spent (yikes) hours on the internet looking for news of him that would inspre me. Unfortunately, my creativity is most potent when I am heartbroken but I have had little luck finding news to sufficiently suffer from a broken heart over Viggo's "new girlfriend". I'm sure she exists. Could you please deal me my final blow (not that I ever had a chance) and tell me who the lucky girl is? I need to be put out of my misery. I know from his poetry and paintings that Viggo also takes inspiration from his own romances! Do you know anything?

[Thanks for the comments, Ray! Can't help regarding Viggo's girlfriend(s) or lack thereof, though, as I don't follow his private life. --Donna]

I am so glad I found your site-I have visited most of them in my inexplicable quest to find out more and more about this artist, poet, actor, equestrian, and moral compass of a man.

I was 16 when I read the LOTR trilogy and fell in love with Aragorn. I was 40+ when I saw him come to life in an astonishing way on screen. Then after the first movie, when my kids found an online voting forum for "Who is Hotter, Aragorn or Legolas?" and asked me to submit my vote, I didn't even have to think. Then when I saw a small news item somewhere about his remarks on the Charlie Rose show, I began to seriously check out Viggo the real person. (I do happen to agree with his politics, but I have to mention how much I appreciate the tolerance on this site by the web mistress and various readers for the differing opinions expressed here--you don't find that everywhere.)

I was laid out on the carpet by his personal and artistic integrity, his warmth, his candor, his generosity with fans, and that cute little scar on his upper lip. And I am no "swooner", either!

I agree with most of your reasons for adoring Viggo in the Viggo Theory section, but I don't think the main draw for me is admiring him for having the courage to follow his muse and speak out politically; but rather for his commitment to being the best person he can be and his caring for the people (and horses) around him. I, too, have read a lot of Joseph Campbell and really tried to live my life as if I were on a "hero's journey", devoting myself to a low-paying but critically necessary career in advocacy social work, and trying to live in the moment and see God in the details. But you know what? It can be hard as hell! And I find it so encouraging that here comes Viggo Mortensen, a guy with great looks, huge talent, money, and fame, and he is walking the same walk. And that the hero's journey is what is really important to him, not all the fame and fortune stuff, is infinitely inspiring to me. So Viggo, thanks for being who you are, and Donna, thanks for helping to make it possible to find out more about that. I most appreciate your site's intellegence, variety, and literary slant (with the fan fiction page.)

(feel free to post this on your site, and also thanks for naming it Brego! Sorry this is so long, but once I got going it was hard to shut up.)

Hi, Donna and Everyone, My name is Patti, and I live in Wales UK, I'm 55years old, I really love what you in the "Viggo Theory" I have been a fan of Viggos since the "Fellowship" came out on Dvd, By then I had seen the movie, about 25 times in theatres, and as I wouldn't watch Boromir dying, I used to watch Aragorn, he grew on me, so much so, that by the time "The Two Towers" came out in the theatre, I was "In Love" with Aragorn, then I bought more Viggo Dvds, and began to appreciate Viggo, as a man.
I have seen all 3 movies over 100 times, between all 3, and did the trilogy, in Cardiff in April, I was over the moon to see them all together.
I have the 2 EE, and cannot wait until "Return" comes out in EE, to see the movie, as it was meant to be seen.
I am collecting all Viggo's movies, but have to get some of them from the US, and I had "Vanishing Point" from Australia, And I can't even play it until I get a multi-region Dvd player at the end of the month.
Because of this man, I have taken computer classes, joined the Uni, to take my exams (ECDL) in computing, and now I am taking classes in web-pages, HTML, Dreamweaver, and Desktop publishing, So I can make my own Viggo site, not yet, I want to learn all I can. This site is so good, I would want my own to be as good.
I have a husband, children, and grandchildren, they all support me in this, my dear husband of 33 years, is happy for me to be in Viggo fandom, so I will carry on, Viggo makes me very happy, and I`ve written my first poem for him, and even my first fan-fic, but it's not for publishing, it's personal, and I'm glad I created something for myself, I'd never wanted to before, so that's enough about me, I'd just like to say, this site is first class, Donna, thank you, best wishes, Patti x

Congratulations on your interesting site. I am sure it is a great deal of hard work to set up and maintain. It is certainly appreciated by my family. We are three generations of Lord of the Rings fans. I was persuaded by my grandson to take him to the Fellowship of the Ring, and so became as committed a fan as he is. Thanks again and keep up the good work! Gwen Christie.

Finally, an intelligent site regarding Viggo. I've sifted through so much muck that coming upon your site was like a breath of fresh air. Thanks for your thoughts, many of which I agree with. When I was young (very many moons ago) Strider/Aragorn was always my favorite character in the books, and when LOTR was released I was so pleased that what had been in my imagination all this time had been brought to life by Viggo, who seems just as intriguing as the character he played. I'm looking forward to his future, and thanks again for a great site!

Just had to tell you I share my home with a 10 month old Brown Burmese kitten named Brego. Like you I am a Viggo fan, but also a Tolkien fanatic, so it was only natural that I chose a name with a link to both.

Love your site and it's philosophy, will visit again.

Couldn't find any reference (in my quick perusal) to Arod (Legolas' horse) do you know anything about him?

PS Brego's companion is a Siamese called Tosca, another story.

Thanks for creating a website with "horsey" info. I am a horse owner, LOTR book and movie fan, and a recent convert to Viggo fan! Nice to have a good resource for questions about several of the horses from the movies.

I've added your site as a bookmark to my LOTR category!

Keep up the good work!

When I read your Viggo Theory page it was almost as if you were reading my mind! At my age one would expect to have got passed this level of obsession but I agree that Viggo is exceptional in that he is an interesting, articulate, intelligent, thoughtful and wonderful man who luckily for us is also extremely physically attractive!

My oddyessy to this point started christmas 2003 with the EE of the first two LOTR films. All those interviews captured my interest and a crash course in the internet from my daughter set me off on a voyage into archives back to the start of LOTR and then into Viggo's film career. A walk on the Moon had a very disturbing effect on me and I followed that with Indian Ruunner, American Yakuza (all of which I now own) the Crimson Tide, A Perfect Murder, Portrait of a Lady and Boiling Point. I've downloaded pictures, read almost every article currently accessible, listened to audio interviews and watched video interviews. I still have more to go but i have to get on with the rest of my life sometimes!

It's very nice to be able to confess to this crazy obsession to a fellow "sufferer". My friends think I am a perfectly sane woman in her mid-fifties and would probably doubt my sanity if they new the extent of my devotion to Viggo. Fortunately my daughter just calls me "my mother the teenager" and my son barely notices! Even I step back occasionally and wonder at the way all this has affected me but then I think "why not?" I have three books of Viggo's and one CD so far and delight in the insight to the other sides of his complex persona. Finding your website was a real treat and I shall continue to visit regularly. Here in England we do not have anything like the coverage of "Entertainment" news so the internet is my best source of information. I shall definitely be signing the petition for directors cut of A Walk on the Moon, and look forward to exploring your site fully.

Dear Donna, many thanks for the beautiful and interesting site devoted my loved to the actor, and also the poet, the artist, the musician, the photographer and simply great person Viggo Mortensen. He became my angel-keeper, helps me to overcome vital difficulties and to cope with problems.

We with him are very similar, we love one and too, for us the same things are unacceptable, he is possible it my second half, related soul and from consciousnesses of it to me any more so it is lonely. I would like to tell to him thanks simply that he is on my life, light of his eyes, magic of his smile help me to survive.

From Moscow with love.

Your webpage "Viggo Theory" gave me chills!!!
i couldn't belive the amount of time I spent searching for information.
I have done my share of day-dreaming. But I always thought of myself as someone who has a grip on reality. And knows the difference between what is real and what is fantasy.
I couldn't belive the amount of time I was spending on Fantasy Island.
The more I learned the more I wanted to know.
Here is a man who doesn't just stand up for what he believes; he stands behind it as well.
In treating people with respect. He has respect.
Intelligent, talented.
I see paitence, understanding.
There is a strength, surrounded by softness.
"he passionately pursues what he's interested in"
The fact that he IS elusive.
he wouldn't have to be physically attractive to be attractive.
But, he is physically attractive!!! BONUS.
Is it any wonder Fanstay Island was a forwarding address for a while?
How many people do you know that have all these qualities?

I am so glad I'm not alone.

I have become a Viggo fan at about the same time as you, and I've undergone more or less the same process of admiring first his acting talent first and then his deep artistic vision and overwhelming responsibility as a person and as citizen (albeit that I believe he doesn't understand some of the motives of the politics he criticizes). Aside from the pure joy of "meeting" a fellow viggophile, I would like to thank you for discovering other topics of discussion in the viggosphere and thus encouraging the visitors to you site to learn more. Remember, Viggo himself values most highly intellectual curiosity that is so abundant in him.
It is a pity that there are hardly any Viggo fans here in Israel, but then this obliges me to look for friends abroad, and what could be more wonderful!

I just found your website, and read your "Viggo Theory". I was delighted to realize your analysis of what's attracted you to Viggo is similar to mine, and your conclusion is pretty much the same I reached!

-The uncanny thing is I had just been writing in my journal something quite similar, just before I turned on my computer and found your site.

I'd also written I felt rather "lonely", unable to find in other forums or sites people with whom I felt I could actually connect or communicate, and then I found what you wrote, and thought, "Wow, we're so similar!"

-Of course, there's a few important differences: I, too, have been a Trek fan for years, but of the Original Series (I'm a bit embarrassed to admit Kirk was my original obssession, as a teenager. I did always love The Beatles and John Lennon, though!)

My political views are in many ways different from yours, but I'm just glad to find a fellow fan with serious political views!

I'm glad you found a creative outlet through website design. (I still haven't found the right outlet for me, or perhaps I have, but I haven't had the courage to pursue it!)

Anytime you wish to continue "philosophizing", analyzing or whatever, count me in!

I wanted to congratulate you on your insight and creative solution. I've experienced a similar trek, questioning my sanity, my obsession and my need for creative fulfillment. Your self awareness helped me to understand my needs and also helped me to not judge myself so harshly for wanting and needing creative inspiration and outlet.

Thanks to Viggo for the inspiration and thanks to you for the direction.

First off I love your site! I only just found it tonight but will already give it *two thumbs up* & say it's one of the best Viggo sites I have seen so far. I really like the layout & quality. I can't wait to lurk around some more!

I was looking through your page on Brego & found an inaccuracy: "Uraeus now lives on Viggo's ranch in Idaho."

This is not true. Uraeus & Kenny never left New Zealand. I have proof in the following article. (TJ is currently being held on a ranch in my town in Southern Ca. I heard he will eventually be moving up to VM's Idaho home.)

I'm not sending this article to you to be a royal pain in the rear, I just thought you would like to know. I know I would.

Keep up the great work on your site! I know I will be a frequent visitor! :)

Found kinship of spirit with your site. Your writings are thoughtful and insightful and struck a chord within me. I have experience some kind of life passage discovering more of Lord of the Rings but especially a fellow human being named Viggo Mortensen. I believe that he has given many of us pause to reflect on our own lives and what is meaningful. Yes, being handsome sure doesn't hurt. However, it is his spirit of life that truly draws me to know more about him and in return, more of me. Thank you for taking the time to share your writings with us and developing a forum that may lead to more goodness in this world.

I like your site and you have done a great job organizing the material!
Thank you for the Viggo theory. I had the same experience as you, totally immersed myself in Viggo for a time and came out inspired on the other end. I am relieved that someone else had the same experience, that I am not out of my mind...
Please add a feature to your site - "What would Viggo do?". We need it to guide us.

I just read the Brego page and a thought came up on me. You say that nobody would turn a horse free while still wearing a halter and a rope attached to that. It seems unlogical that people from Rohan would do this. I think that he wasn't turned free yet, but taken to Helms Deep. When they were attacked, Brego broke free. Of course there is no evidence about this theory, but it seems more logical.

I was surfing through the net and I found this fantastic site! Congratulations! I really appreciated that!

I'm crazy for Viggo, not only because he is handsome and sexy. Of course, he is. But I admire him because he is a complete artist. He is painter, photographer, musician, poet and actor! It's almost impossible to find all these talents in one person!

May 25, 2004
Your Viggo Theory strikes such a resonance with me. I am often appalled by how much time I have spent on the internet reading Viggo's words and looking at his photos and painting. My obsession started a year and a half ago, and I'm sorry to say it hasn't ended yet. However, I am glad to say that Viggo's words have inspired me to be more present in my life - to appreciate the little details that are too often missed. And he has inspired my own creative impulses - I paint and make collages that I never dreamed of doing before seeing his painting in "A Perfect Murder". I guess some of my obsession is gratitude for the positive impact he has had on my life! Hope you feel the same - and thanks for using your creativity to create this great website - that's a talent that is beyond me!

ditto, sister. :)

Your site has struck a chord inside me, having also only recently come to appreciate the myriad talents of Viggo. I came from the standpoint of never even having been interested in the Tolkien trilogy, so I had no clue about any of it, just knew that I wanted to wait to see all three movies at the same time. So I waited, and it was worth it, and I was knocked on my assets by the performance of the guy who played Aragorn. Then I find he's playing a part in a 'western' and I knew I had to see that. Westerns and I go way back. Hidalgo blew me away, he nails the part of Frank. 6 viewings later, I can see where the critics and detractors come from, but I'm still amazed! I hunted for and purchased a copy of the script, and have also spent my share of $$ on other Viggo movies at Amazon! Current favorite character, John James Urgayle. What *did* O'Neil have to say to him once they landed on the aircraft carrier and whisked him off to sick bay??!! >:-)

Well, anyway, just wanted to drop you a note and let you know that you are not alone in your appreciation. Viggo Mortensen is truly something special.

Love the name of your site!

I wanted to thank you for your work on the "brego.net" website and the clearness of his contents.

I came here by curiosity after I've seen some video interviews with Viggo Mortensen, and I got interested in more (poetry, music, photographs, painting) along the way.

After I've read your explanation on VIGGO THEORY, I decided to contact you directly for telling you how your sharing is working !!

I'm actually french and I did design websites few years ago but now I'm traveling. I've decided to move on and get in my walking shoes for a while!!

I'm now searching for a volunteering mission in the environment for 2 years and I hope to find something in NORWAY, SWEDEN or NZ for the beautiful nature you can find there and the adventure to be abroad in an international context.

My research lead me to your website by a weird way of thinking : NATURE-NEW ZELAND/NEW ZELAND-LORD OF THE RING/LORD OF THE RING-VIGGO MORTENSEN/VIGGO MORTENSEN-YOUR WEBSITE !

Here is the little story.
I wanted to share that with you because we never know enough how our acts can affect the others, and today you reach someone for good. I've learn more about Viggo but over this I got a good mood by listening his poems and reading his thoughts, simply.
