Appaloosa Synopsis

Release fall 2008 - The western town of Appaloosa, terrorized by a rancher and his thugs, hires Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and his sidekick Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) to establish law and order. A lovely widow sets her sights on Cole, complicating the men's job and testing their partnership.

Appaloosa Brief Review

The film is based on the book Appaloosa by Robert B. Parker. The book is a short novel and a great read. The characters Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch are well-drawn, with wry humor and great respect in spite of their eccentricity. The dialogue alone makes the book worth reading.

Everett Hitch is the book's narrator. According to the trailer and some early reports, Viggo Mortensen as Hitch does provide a background narration in some of the beginning and ending segments of the film.

According to Worth Watching, Appaloosa is scheduled to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this September before being released domestically later in the fall. New Line Cinema, under operation by Warner Brothers, is said to be releasing Appaloosa in limited theaters starting on October 3rd. There were reports of mid-September releases in the US and/or Europe, but those seem to have been incorrect.

Author Robert B. Parker refers to Appaloosa as the first novel of a trilogy. The second book, Resolution, was released in June, and the third entry, Brimstone, is due out in 2009.

Appaloosa Soundtrack

According to Upcoming Film Scores, "composer Jeff Beal reunites with actor/director Ed Harris, scoring his new film, Appaloosa. Beal wrote the music for Harris' previous directing effort, Pollock." This is in contradiction to early reports that Gustavo Santaolalla would be composing the film score.
