A few quotes. "I think if [the people of Iraq] are left to take care of their own affairs, I think they'll do better in the long run." When asked if he thought the United States should pull out right now, he answered, "Absolutely. I support our troops, and the best way to support them is to bring them home immediately. This is the wrong place to be." Speaking of Bush: "Fiscal responsibility. Moral values. Fiscal responsibility. All of the planks of his political platforms have proved to be rotten and unstable."
In a broader sense, he comments, "In some sense, there is no such thing as 'national security' any more than there is 'individual security.' You have to keep working on it." Discussion goes on to cover Perceval Press and the roots of Viggo's activism.

Crimson Tide Video Clips
When I think of Crimson Tide, I think first of the sweating--Viggo in his crewcut, saying nothing, jaw muscles twitching, with giant beads of sweat gathering on his stress-laden face. Then I think of the ironing, and break out in a grin. Who can resist a man who irons with such precision and grace?
crim-01: At the birthday party «14-Sep-04» - Lt. Peter Ince (Viggo Mortensen) is at the birthday party for the young daughter of Commander Hunter (Denzel Washington). With Ince is his son, played by Viggo's real-life son, Henry Blake Mortensen.

Floundering Video Clips
Viggo Mortensen's role in Floundering, along with his then-wife Exene Cervenka and son Henry, is so short as to be almost a cameo. The minute-and-a-half clip below is their only appearance. But then the credits roll, and you are treated to a brief glimpse of the people behind the roles.
flnd-01: Homeless family «18-Sep-04» - Late in the film Floundering, a homeless man, woman, and child (Viggo Mortensen, Exene Cervenka, Henry Peter Mortensen), packed into their vehicle with belongings tied to the top, appear in front of John Boyz' (James LeGros) apartment. John offers his apartment to them as he leaves town. The woman (Exene) accepts gladly; the man (Viggo) whines that it was probably a crack house.

flnd-02: Credits «18-Sep-04» - During the Floundering credits, the cast sings along in a rendition of "Nothing Funny 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding," as the camera pans through the crowd. Here it finds Exene Cervenka and Viggo Mortensen. Viggo is holding Henry and a piece of paper with illegible writing on it.

Fresh Horses Video Clips
Viggo Mortensen is undoubtedly the best thing about Fresh Horses. I'm particularly fond of the first clip, where he simply sits and removes his hat. But his later lines, delivered with an edgy cynicism, are also worth watching. It is said that it was this role that led Sean Penn to consider him for the role of Frank in Indian Runner.
fh-01: Sitting at the counter «16-Nov-04» - Green (Viggo Mortensen) enters a small diner and sits at the counter, asking for coffee. He looks tired and maybe a bit sad, and looks toward the camera as he removes his hat. The stills capture his face better, but there is something very graceful about his gesture with the hat.
Quicktime video 320x240 (00'11, 1MB)
fh-03: Wash your mouth «16-Nov-04» - After Matt criticizes Green's soap carvings and destroys one of them, Green (Viggo Mortensen) says with a slight edge of anger, "Maybe I ought to wash your mouth out with it."
Quicktime video 320x240 (00'05, 500KB)
fh-04: Be the prince? «16-Nov-04» - Green (Viggo Mortensen) cynically questions Matt, asking what he thinks he's doing. "You're going to be the prince, is that it? You're going to carry her off on a big white horse?"
Quicktime video 320x240 (00'06, 608KB)
fh-05: Too good for her «16-Nov-04» - After Matt (Andrew McCarthy) says he wants to get Jewel away from Green (Viggo Mortensen), even though he doesn't want her himself, Green laughs. "But you're too good for her, is that it? I ain't good enough, but you're too f*cking good."
Quicktime video 320x240 (00'12, 1.3MB)
fh-06: Bag of tricks «16-Nov-04» - Green (Viggo Mortensen) says of Jewel (Molly Ringwald), "She's one bag of tricks, isn't she? Between you and me, reach in, don't know what you're gonna get."
Quicktime video 320x240 (00'07, 560KB)
fh-08: Black magic «16-Nov-04» - Green (Viggo Mortensen) describes one night when he came home to Jewel (Molly Ringwald). "She had some kind of black magic going on. Had them g*ddamn cards spread all over the floor. Candles burning all over the house. Frightening scene. Honey, what was it you was trying to find in the cards that night? Your future?"
Quicktime video 320x240 (00'24, 2.1MB)
fh-11: Complete scene at Green's house «14-Aug-05» - This 5-minute clip is the complete scene between Viggo Mortensen as Green, Andrew McCarthy as Matt Larkin and Molly Ringwald as Jewel. Passion of Darkly Moon Video Clips
I thoroughly enjoyed watching Viggo Mortensen play Clay, a man who cannot speak, in The Passion of Darkly Moon. He expresses himself with his hands and facial expressions. And we must admit that the scenes between Clay and Callie (Ashley Judd) are smoldering!
pdn-06b: After-dinner talk «16-Sep-07» - After dinner, Clay (Viggo Mortensen) charms Callie (Ashley Judd) with magic tricks. In turn, Callie asks him to let Darkly Noon (Brendan Fraser) stay with them.

pdn-07: Working in the shop «16-Sep-07» - Clay (Viggo Mortensen) is working in his shop, planing boards to be used for making coffins. Darkly Noon (Brendan Fraser) is helping him. But when Darkly starts asking questions about Clay's relationship with Callie, Clay gets annoyed.

pdn-14a: Evening smoke «16-Sep-07» - Clay (Viggo Mortensen) walks out onto the front porch and sits down for a quiet smoke.

Quicktime video 320x240 (00'22, 1.7MB)
pdn-14c: Smoldering «16-Sep-07» - Callie (Ashley Judd) and Clay (Viggo Mortensen) get passionate. In the film, scenes of the loving couple are interspersed with ever more disturbing images of Darkly Moon. After editing out Darkly, I had about 2.5 minutes of Callie and Clay, which I cut to just under a minute. Rating for this clip is probably PG-13. There's more in the film, including the famous tabletop bit.

This is a first for Brego.net -- I enjoyed the performances of Christopher Walken, Amanda Plummer, and the actors so much that I just had to capture a few clips of their performances.

pro-w-14: Why? «12-May-05» - When Katherine (Virginia Madsen) asks Gabriel (Christopher Walken) why he is attacking a child, he replies, "I'm an angel. I kill first-borns while their mamas watch. pro-w-16: Gabriel, Rachel & Madge «10-May-05» - Because he cannot drive a car, Gabriel (Christopher Walken) has temporarily turned Rachel (Amanda Plummer) into a zombie at the moment of her death so that she can serve as his chauffeur. In this scene, they have stopped at a roadside diner to ask the waitress, Madge (Sandra Lafferty), for directions. Rachel is having trouble handling the transition from hospital to living dead, and refuses to go on with Gabriel. He replies, "Eternity, here, in that sagging skin suit, or one more day with me." When she asks why, he replies, "Can't drive. But I can wait until the stars burn out for you to make up your mind." Witness Video Clips
Viggo Mortensen's first movie, and he steals the scenes with that wide-open grin. It is said that his role (Moses Hochleitner) was originally smaller, but the director liked what he saw and expanded Viggo's part.
wit-03: Moses at the Funeral «20-Jan-18» - Viggo Mortensen's first on-screen speech. Moses Hochleitner (Viggo) and several other Amish men are chatting after a funeral, talking about the deceased. Took a few listens, but I think I finally caught all the dialogue. Older Amish men: "Jake was a good farmer, none better. But not the man to buy a horse for you. Hochleitner, wasn't it your father sold him the horse with the ruptured testicle?"
Moses' response: "He told him it was a bee sting made him limp that way."
Moses' older brother, Daniel Hochleitner (Alexander Godunov): "That horse had one good ball. That's all it takes."
